On Saturday October 10 at 8:00 pm, legendary singer-songwriter Greg Brown returns to the Capitol Theater to perform at the 5th annual benefit concert for the Foundation for Self-Sufficiency in Central America and the Olympia Film Society. Greg has a dedicated fan base around the Pacific Northwest and his last performance in at the Capitol Theater was in front of a sold-out audience. Tickets available at www.buyolympia.com at at Rainy Day Records in Olympia.
Though a touring musician for over thirty years, he has never abandoned those things that move him deeply — family, home, poetry and the natural world. Music and words flow through him and he uses them to paint simple yet powerful images on a canvas of gospel, blues, country, rock, and jazz. A firm believer in community and ecological responsibility, he often uses his music to support these causes — both directly (doing benefit concerts and through sales of benefit CD’s) and indirectly (using his gift for words to point out environmental or social ills in his strong yet subtle voice). Brown's songwriting has been lauded by many, and his songs have been performed by a wide range of artists, including Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson, Del McCoury, Carlos Santana, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, and Joan Baez.
In addition to having been twice nominated for Grammy Awards, in 2007 he was nominated for a Folk Alliance Award in the category of Contemporary Artist of the Year. When not on the road, he splits his time between Iowa and Missouri with his children and wife Iris DeMent.
