EARTH & ECOLOGY
in BIBLICAL TEXTS
The First Creation Story.
Genesis 1: 1-31
1 In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth.
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface
of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, "Let there
be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was
good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called
the light "day," and the darkness he called "night."
And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day.
6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters
to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and
separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And
it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was
evening, and there was morning-the second day.
9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to
one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God
called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters
he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing
plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according
to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced
vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees
bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God
saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning-the
third day.
14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the
sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs
to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in
the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it
was so. 16 God made two great lights-the greater light to govern
the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the
stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on
the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light
from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening,
and there was morning-the fourth day.
20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures,
and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."
21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living
and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their
kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw
that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful
and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the
birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and
there was morning-the fifth day.
24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according
to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground,
and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so.
25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock
according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along
the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,
and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the
air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures
that move along the ground."
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase
in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the
sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that
moves on the ground."
29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the
face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed
in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of
the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that
move on the ground-everything that has the breath of life in it-I
give every green plant for food." And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there
was evening, and there was morning-the sixth day.
The Second Creation Story.
Genesis 2: 4-9, 15
4 This is the account of the heavens
and the earth when they were created.
When the LORD God made the earth
and the heavens- 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on
the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD
God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work
the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the
whole surface of the ground- 7 the LORD God formed the man from
the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath
of life, and the man became a living being.
8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and
there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all
kinds of trees grow out of the ground-trees that were pleasing to
the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the
tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
15 The LORD God took the man and
put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
The Flood and Blessing of the
Earth. Genesis 8: 21-22
21 The LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the
ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart
is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living
creatures, as I have done.
22 "As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease."
The Sabbatical and Jubilee Year.
Lev. 25: 1-4, 6, 8-14, 17-19, 23 (Jewish Agrarian Reform)
1 The LORD said to Moses on Mount
Sinai, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When you
enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe
a sabbath to the LORD. 3 For six years sow your fields, and for
six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. 4 But in
the seventh year the land is to have a sabbath of rest, a sabbath
to the LORD . Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.
6 Whatever the land yields during
the sabbath year will be food for you-for yourself, your manservant
and maidservant, and the hired worker and temporary resident who
live among you
The Year of Jubilee
8 " 'Count off seven sabbaths of years-seven times seven years-so
that the seven sabbaths of years amount to a period of forty-nine
years. 9 Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day
of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet
throughout your land. 10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim
liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be
a jubilee for you; each one of you is to return to his family property
and each to his own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee
for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest
the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for
you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields.
13 " 'In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to his
own property.
14 " 'If you sell land to one of your countrymen or buy any
from him, do not take advantage of each other.
17 Do not take advantage of each
other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God.
18 " 'Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and
you will live safely in the land. 19 Then the land will yield its
fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.
23 " 'The land must not be
sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens
and my tenants.'"
The Year of Canceling Debts.
Deuteronomy 15: 1-4 (Jewish Agrarian Reform)
1 At the end of every seven years
you must cancel debts. 2 This is how it is to be done: Every creditor
shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelite. He shall
not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother, because
the LORD's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. 3 You may
require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your
brother owes you. 4 However, there should be no poor among you,
for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your
inheritance, he will richly bless you
Cursed is he who Steals his Neighbor's
Land. (Deuteronomy 27: 17)
17 "Cursed is the man who moves
his neighbor's boundary stone."
Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"
The Earth is the Lord's.
(Psalm 24: 1-2)
1 The earth is the LORD's, and everything
in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
2 for he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the waters.
Thanksgiving for God's Blessings.
(Psalm 65 (64))
1 Praise awaits you, O God, in Zion;
to you our vows will be fulfilled.
2 O you who hear prayer,
to you all men will come.
3 When we were overwhelmed by sins,
you forgave our transgressions.
4 Blessed are those you choose
and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
of your holy temple.
5 You answer us with awesome deeds
of righteousness,
O God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas,
6 who formed the mountains by your power,
having armed yourself with strength,
7 who stilled the roaring of the seas,
the roaring of their waves,
and the turmoil of the nations.
8 Those living far away fear your wonders;
where morning dawns and evening fades
you call forth songs of joy.
9 You care for the land and water
it;
you enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with water
to provide the people with grain,
for so you have ordained it.
10 You drench its furrows
and level its ridges;
you soften it with showers
and bless its crops.
11 You crown the year with your bounty,
and your carts overflow with abundance.
12 The grasslands of the desert overflow;
the hills are clothed with gladness.
13 The meadows are covered with flocks
and the valleys are mantled with grain;
they shout for joy and sing.
The Barren Fig Tree. (Luke
13: 6-9)
6Then he told this parable: "A
man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look
for fruit on it, but did not find any. 7So he said to the man who
took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming
to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it
down! Why should it use up the soil?'
8" 'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year,
and I'll dig around it and fertilize it. 9If it bears fruit next
year, fine! If not, then cut it down.' "
