FSSCA's Friends Shining El Salvador's
Rays of Light

From July through September a group of dedicated FSSCA friends organized to bring to Austin the "Rays of Light: Hope, Life & Art from El Salvador" exhibit and reception in September.

Meeting on Wednesday afternoons at the FSSCA office to tackle all the details for the art exhibit while enjoying pizza among friends became a routine of every week for the Art Committee. The Art Committee did everything from deciding on a theme for the exhibit, to having the artwork mounted, to promoting the event, to creating a beautiful program, to finally producing a successful reception, and more.

Reception day came with all the expectation built up from months past. FSSCA flew in the students' art teacher José Alberto García, better known as Joalgar. At the reception he shared the amazing ways in which this art project impacts his students' lives. Everyone had a marvelous time, but most importantly, many people became interested and involved with the art project in El Salvador's Bajo Lempa and other projects the FSSCA supports.

Besides the Art Committee, the reception could have also not been possible without the support of our generous sponsors: Fiesta Mart—your one-stop-shop for products from around the world; La Peña; Alphagraphics; Townlake Florist and Bridal; the Law office of Charles Sanders; David Ransom, MFA; and other thoughtful supporters.

Throughout the exhibit, the students' art has captivated many attendees who have purchased their paintings and in doing so directly supported them and the project that teaches them new techniques and skills. Their artwork continues in exhibition and available for purchase at Las Manitas Avenue Café at 211 Congress Avenue.

The Art Committee truly made a difference in the lives of teens they've never met in El Salvador's Bajo Lempa. Other groups of supporters across the United States have also done this and continue doing it. The communities in Central America truly appreciate their efforts that are a gift in solidarity.
